Renal pelvis dilatation or hydronephrosis is a widening of the renal pelvis and is a common finding on ultrasound scans USS performed during pregnancy. Often it is temporary and not associated with any problems in the kidney or ureter. However, in a small proportion of cases, hydronephrosis can be a sign of problems involving the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or the urethra tube through which urine leaves the bladder. Usually, the first step is an ultrasound scan of the kidneys renal USS after your baby is born. For most babies, the best time to do this is usually five to seven days after birth but it will be done earlier if indicated. Your doctor will let you know who will follow-up the result of that scan.

The signs and symptoms of hydronephrosis depend upon whether the obstruction is acute or chronic , partial or complete, unilateral or bilateral. Hydronephrosis that occurs acutely with sudden onset as caused by a kidney stone can cause intense pain in the flank area between the hips and ribs. Historically, this type of pain has been described as "Dietl's crisis". Nausea and vomiting may also occur. An obstruction that occurs at the urethra or bladder outlet can cause pain and pressure resulting from distension of the bladder. Blocking the flow of urine will commonly result in urinary tract infections which can lead to the development of additional stones, fever, and blood or pus in the urine.
Language: English Polish. Kidney ultrasound is one of the basic procedures in the practice of a urologist. Apart from the location and the size, description of renal morphology should contain the thickness of the anterior lip parenchyma in a transverse section and the location of possible narrowings. Uneven outline of the kidney is a sign of past inflammatory conditions. In the case of the pelvicalyceal system dilation, it is advised to specify the dimensions of the pelvis and calyces. Convex shape of the calyces proves elevated pressure within the pelvicalyceal system.

For the majority with mild 5 to 9 mm to moderate 10 to 15 mm RPD, however, there is uncertainty about the risk of abnormalities and how much postnatal investigation is required. Results: Of potentially relevant papers, 18 met the inclusion criteria. Conclusions: Our novel risk estimates are useful for antenatal counseling at presentation. Routine fetal ultrasound has revolutionized management of pregnancies by improving accuracy of gestational age assessment and detection of fetal anomalies. Neveretheless, an abnormal finding can affect parental attitudes toward the pregnancy and their unborn baby 1 — 3 and lead to unnecessary postnatal investigations. Renal pelvis dilatation RPD is the most common organ-specific fetal condition detected antenatally 4 and one of the most difficult diagnostic challenges.
