It is the flagship university of the University of Colorado system and was founded five months before Colorado was admitted to the Union in In , the university comprised nine colleges and schools and offered over academic programs and enrolled almost 17, students. The Buffaloes have won 28 national championships: 20 in skiing , seven total in men's and women's cross country , and one in football. Approximately students participate in 34 intercollegiate club sports annually as well. On March 14, , the Colorado territorial legislature passed an amendment to the state constitution that provided money for the establishment of the University of Colorado in Boulder, the Colorado School of Mines in Golden , and the Colorado Agricultural College in Fort Collins. The consolation prize for the losing city was to be home of the new Colorado State Prison.

A University of Colorado committee convened to examine restructuring the College of Arts and Sciences released its report in March , which recommends maintaining the unified college but internally restructuring it. CU Provost Russell Moore formed the committee in spring to study a faculty-written paper suggesting a restructuring. The committee did not recommend using the model in the paper, but instead recommended naming three deans who would report to an executive dean to head the largest campus college. In this scenario, an executive dean would serve as a leader and supervisor of the college and three divisional deans would have greater budgetary authority and responsibilities. The committee making the recommendations said in its report that the changes could improve the College of Arts and Sciences representation in campus-level decision making, get the college more attention for resource allocations, enhance faculty governance, optimize internal resource allocations, generate new revenue and empower decision-making at a divisional level. In its study, the committee looked at two peer institutions with similar experiences. One, the University of California Davis College of Letters and Science, previously used a structure similar to that recommended in the faculty-written paper, which has school deans report directly to the provost and responsibility for shared services given to a managing dean.

Its mission is to provide an outstanding liberal arts education for its undergraduates, cutting-edge graduate education and world-class research, scholarship and creative work. In addition to gaining the knowledge and skills of their areas of study, students learn how new information is acquired and can participate in original research and creative work with individual faculty members. The college offers a wide variety of fields of study, with nearly 50 undergraduate majors. The environment and advantages of a small liberal arts college are created through "academic neighborhoods" in which students can meet and interact with other students and faculty in small group settings. In addition, more than 60 percent of undergraduate classes are small, with 25 or fewer students.
